Thank you for making IAFS 2023 a pivotal moment for forensic science
On behalf of the Organising Committee, I sincerely thank you for attending the 23rd Triennial Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences, held in conjunction with the 26th Symposium of the Australian & New Zealand Forensic Science Society at the Sydney International Convention Centre from the 20th to the 24th November 2023.
This landmark event, which drew over 1,700 delegates from 70 countries, including 20 scholarship recipients from low to middle-income nations, stands as a pinnacle in the history of forensic science conferences. The scientific program featured four compelling plenary sessions, ten parallel breakout sessions spanning 22 disciplines, nearly 600 electronic posters, and 25 pre-conference workshops. Additionally, there were eight industry-led workshops (including AFP transdisciplinary workshops), “Where to from here” mini-summits, and numerous special events, including a forum dedicated to the Sydney Declaration, co-hosted by the University of Technology Sydney and the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences.
The social program added a vibrant touch, fostering connections and reigniting camaraderie. From the welcome reception where the #iafs2023 (in)famous koalas took a backstage to their living counterparts, to the unforgettable “Out of this World” ANZFSS social night, and the gala dinner at Luna Park overlooking Sydney Harbour, each moment was marked by a positive vibe and palpable excitement. We held engaging discussions and shared time with new and old colleagues and friends, something we sorely missed during the pandemic.
Our vision aimed at leaving a lasting legacy, fostering collaboration with emerging countries and empowering early career delegates through tangible strategic outcomes. IAFS 2023 exceeded expectations, resonating as a resounding success and achieving our objectives. As articulated by one of our plenary speakers, it served as a pivotal moment where forensic science began articulating its own language and championing its distinctive culture and vision. We take pride in our leading role in this transformative journey.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved – Organisation and Advisory Committee members, Discipline Convenors, workshop presenters, sponsors, exhibitors, conference presenters and every single delegate – for making this journey both rewarding and fulfilling.
I warmly congratulate Prof. Yanko Kolev from Bulgaria on his election as IAFS President for 2023-2026, and looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate our future gatherings, with Melbourne hosting ANZFSS 2025 and Sofia welcoming us for IAFS 2026. Thank you once again for your invaluable contribution!
