Official Postponement Announcement to 2023 – 26 August 2020
As you will be aware, due to the circumstances surrounding coronavirus COVID-19, the 22nd Triennial Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Science in conjunction with the 25th Symposium of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society originally due to be held in September 2020 was postponed to May 2021.
The COVID-19 situation continues to change rapidly, and most Australian public institutions and venues have significant restrictions in place (pertaining to social distancing and capacities). It is currently not possible to travel to, from, or within Australia for the purposes of an event like IAFS 2020 and the Australian Government has not indicated a time frame for relief of restrictions.
The IAFS 2020 Organising Committee has reluctantly determined that, owing to further uncertainties about when social and economic life will return to normal in Australia and worldwide, we are regrettably not able to host IAFS in Sydney in May 2021. We are delighted however, to announce the 23rd Triennial Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Sciences in conjunction with the 26th Symposium of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society will be held at the International Convention Centre, Sydney, Australia from 20 – 24 November 2023.
We are confident in this decision to further postpone the Meeting to protect the health and safety of our speakers, delegates, sponsors and exhibitors and look forward to an even bigger and better IAFS 2023 in beautiful Sydney, Australia. We will use the next three years to plan an innovative, engaging and memorable event, that is sure to leave a lasting legacy for many years to come.
We would like to thank all our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, delegates, suppliers and the Australian Government for their unwavering support.

President International Association of Forensic Sciences
Dear Friend of IAFS, ANZFSS and forensic science and medicine,
I am honoured to be the current President of the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS), and to be organising the 23rd Triennial Meeting of IAFS in conjunction in Sydney in November 2023, together with our partners and sponsors.
The IAFS encompasses academics and practicing professionals in the forensic specialties. Since 1957, the IAFS has delivered an international meeting every three years to allow the forensic community to meet and exchange ideas. It is our pleasure to host IAFS 2023 in the newly revamped International Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia. We feel privileged and honoured that many of the world’s leading investigators in the field will actively participate and inspire over 1,500 attendees from across the world.
Your IAFS 2020 organising committees are working hard to deliver a memorable meeting. The program will strategically cover critical issues to identify possible solutions for stronger and more reliable forensic science and medicine in the future. We will reach out across the medical, scientific, legal and policing communities, including those in emerging nations, to share data and information, best practice and expand education and research. Our objective is to ensure IAFS 2023 is the focal point for anyone involved or interested in making the world safer and fairer with science and medicine.
As the organisers of the meeting, we cordially invite you to share with us days of scientific communication in the iconic city of Sydney, Australia. Sydney itself is the unofficial capital of Australia and is perched directly on the spectacular Sydney Harbour. IAFS 2023 attendees will be able to travel by ferry to many of the scenic attractions of Sydney, including Manly Beach, Luna Park and the famous Taronga Zoo with the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House a short stroll away.
We encourage you to save the dates in your calendar and register your expression of interest today. This way you can be kept up to date with the latest information and program news. We look forward to welcoming you in Sydney in November 2023!
